Relaxin is a hormone primarily secreted by the corpus luteum in females during pregnancy, and also by the placenta. It helps to soften and relax the muscles and ligaments in the pelvis in preparation for childbirth. Relaxin also plays a role in the expansion and growth of blood vessels, helping to maintain blood flow to the fetus. In addition, it has been shown to have a potential role in reducing inflammation and promoting cell growth and differentiation in various tissues. Relaxin levels can also increase in non-pregnant individuals during the menstrual cycle, as well as in conditions such as heart failure or some types of cancer.
